Apple bombarded with candy-themed games in protest at the word 'candy' being trademarked
1/31/2014 12:59:00 PM

Candy Crush Saga

Such sweet, sweet revenge. After the maker of the hugely popular Candy Crush series of games on the App Store somehow managed to trademark the word "candy" in Europe, other developers have started to fight back by blitzing Apple with an insulin-inducing array of Candy-themed game submissions. Over 100 hastily prepared titles have already been put forward as part of an organized "Candy Jam" protest against the trademarking of common words, including such gobstoppers such as CAN D, ThisGameIsNotAboutCandy, CanDieCanDieCanDie and the inimitable Candy_Game ("Press to hear Candy.")

In the meantime, the developer at the center of the controversy, King.com, continues to pursue legal action against those who use any of words in its arsenal of trademarks, even those that have nothing to do with sugar. This apparently includes one poor dev who had the cheek to use the word "saga" in a Norse mythology-themed game called The Banner Saga -- a title that treads too closely to Candy Crush Saga, according to legal documents filed by King. What's more, now that King has also filed for new trademarks in the US, this whole saga (eek) could be about to get even more sickly.

Sony upgrades smartphone-pairing QX10 and QX100 lens cameras with higher ISO and 1080p video capture
1/31/2014 11:22:00 AM

Shutterbugs who shunned traditional point-and-shoots in favor of Sony's QX10 and QX100 lens cameras can now take even better images and videos. Thanks to a firmware upgrade, both smartphone lens attachments are now capable of recording clips with a higher resolution (1,920 x 1,080) than before (1,440 x 1,080). It also cranks up the clip-ons' max ISO settings from 1,600 to 3,200 on the QX10 and from 3,200 to 12,800 on the QX100, which is bound to please those especially fond of nighttime photography. Other than these two feature boosts, folks with the more expensive QX100 get an extra shutter speed mode for their devices. Unfortunately, users can't upgrade over their phones and will have to download the firmware on a Windows (XP/Vista/7/8) or a Mac computer.

UK government will unblock websites after adult filter blunder
1/31/2014 12:06:00 PM

UK Government to announce mandatory online adult content filters

Shortly after the UK government implemented a nationwide adult content filter, it transpired that it wasn't just naughty sites you couldn't access. Copyright blogs, relationship education sites and even women's crisis centers were all marked as being dangerous for family viewing. After much hand-wringing, the government has admitted the error, and is now working on a whitelist of sites that shouldn't be censored. At the same time, there are plans to develop an appeals system -- so that we can all go back to reading about James Earl Miles Jr. without fear.

Get a 32GB Nexus 7 for £99
1/31/2014 10:38:00 AM

British online retailer Zavvi is listing a 32GB 2012 Nexus 7 tablet for just £99, £80 less than the original recommended retail price.

Although the model has been updated since, with the 2013 Nexus 7 featuring a faster processor, higher resolution screen and a few other improvements, the original is still a cracking device that we've been fans of for a while at Pocket-lint. And at £99, putting it more in Tesco Hudl territory, it's a great value buy.

READ: Nexus 7 review

The Zavvi listing is for a reconditioned original Nexus 7 rather than a brand new one. It describes it as a "Manufacturer Grade A Refurb", which essentially means it should be as good as second-hand models come. The retailer also offers free delivery in the UK, bringing the price down to less than you could even find one on eBay.

We're not sure how many units Zavvi will have in stock. It will ship them from 3 February, so if you want to guarantee you'll get one, you're probably better off pre-ordering it as soon as possible. The offer is currently available on Zavvi.com.

Tiptoe through Spotify's untouched tunes with Forgotify
1/31/2014 10:13:00 AM

Not every song is a smash hit, and for every Katy Perry, there are thousands of Justin Guarinis praying for some attention. At last count, there are around four million songs on Spotify that haven't even been played -- which is why some kind soul has created Forgotify. Simply head to Forgotify.com, click the start listening button and the web app will randomly pick one of the unloved tracks to play. Voila! New music you probably never knew existed. If the outfit's estimates are accurate, you could go a long time before hearing something even remotely well-known, but be warned -- some of these songs were probably forgotten for a reason.

Super Bowl 2014 commercials: Here's a round-up of all the Big Game adverts and teasers‏
1/31/2014 9:14:56 AM

It's Super Bowl weekend. That means it's time for you to grab a bowl of hot chicken wings, a cold brewsky, and pull up a chair to... your computer. Pocket-lint has rounded up one of the things you can't wait to watch most - 30-seconds adverts worth $4 million each.

It's that time of year when creative agencies and big corporations go crazy, lavishing their cash on ad spots that many millions of people will see, critique and replay for years to come. What's it all for, you might ask? The NFL Super Bowl XLVIII, of course.

This year's Super Bowl will air on Sunday, 2 February on Fox Sports in the US and Channel 4 in the UK. And while some viewers will only want to watch the game unfold live from MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, most others will simply want to tune in to see all the pricey ads.

Luckily, thanks to the glory of the internet, those viewers won't have to watch the entire game just to see the ads. That's because many Super Bowl ad teasers are already online, waiting for you to click play. Be warned: They're not full ads, but you'll still get the gist and a preview of what many companies plan to air this weekend.

So here are the best ones we've been able to find so far. Check out each video's YouTube channel as well, because some of them have secondary ads, behind-the-scenes looks, and extra content for the run-up to the Big Game.

Volkswagon

Bud Light

M&M's

Audi

H&M

CarMax

Toyota

Hyundai

Oikos

TurboTax

YouTube Ad Blitz

If you want even more Super Bowl ads, check out Google's YouTube Ad Blitz channel. It plans to feature teaser commercials ahead of the game. Apart from being a one-stop shop for ads, it will also serve up playoff analysis, custom content from YouTube stars, and post-game voting of favourite commercials.

And that's it. Keep checking back for more though, because Pocket-lint will continually update this article as more teasers and adverts go live.

Back to the Future musical going on stage next year, first stop: London
1/31/2014 9:12:00 AM

What better way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future than to take a trip back in time, on stage. A theatrical version of the film is being created by original screenwriter and director Robert Zemeckis and co-writer Bob Gale.

The theatre production of Back to the Future is due to arrive in 2015, starting in London. It could go on a world tour if it proves to be a success.

Gale has confirmed that the musical will feature music from the original film alongside new songs, but there's been no mention of Huey Lewis and the News appearing to play the theme.

"The Back to the Future musical is a project that Bob Zemeckis and I have been exploring for almost 10 years," says Gale. "We're thrilled to be at last in partnership with a creative and producing team that will create a show that is true to the spirit of the film without being a slavish remake.

"With all of us working together, we know the integrity of the material will be preserved in a production that will be a wonderful companion to the trilogy."

Director Jamie Lloyd says: "Rather than attempt to recreate such an iconic movie on stage, we have assembled a brilliant artistic team to discover a unique theatrical language to take audiences on a journey through time in a vibrant, unexpected way. The production will include illusions, skateboarding, and many other surprises that will capture the spirit of the film but freshly interpret it for a new audience."

The first Back to the Future film was released in 1985 staring Michael J Fox. We're keeping our eyes peeled for the London casting call for the Marty McFly role.

UK government draws list of sites for ISPs to unblock again, thanks to over-enthusiastic filters

UK government draws list of sites for ISPs to unblock again, thanks to over-enthusiastic filters
1/31/2014 10:03:00 AM

The UK government is creating a whitelist of websites that have been inadvertently blocked by porn and anti-piracy filters implemented by internet service providers.

Several sites, such as those maintained by drug and sex education charities, have been blocked by over-enthusiastic filters introduced by the ISPs under governmental advice. The filters were introduced after the government called for a system to prevent children being exposed to pornography. And torrent listing sites, such as Pirate Bay and Kickass Torrents, have been blocked too.

The anti-porn filters are generally optional, and ISPs offer them to new customers during initial start-up. Anti-piracy filters are switched on at ISP level and cannot be removed.

A report by the BBC's Newsnight found in December that the adult content filters were also preventing access to sites that offer support services for people with sex addiction or sexual health and domestic abuse support sites.

TorrentFreak, the copyright and privacy news site, has also been said to have been blocked by the ISPs, presumably just because the word "torrent" is in its name.

The government will work with ISPs to find ways to ensure that those on the approved list are unblocked. "Research suggests the amount of inadvertent blocking is low. However. if you are a charity and you deal with teenagers in distress that matters to you," said David Miles, chairman of the group set up to deal with the issue.

Shiver me timbers! This map of the internet is a treasure

Shiver me timbers! This map of the internet is a treasure
1/31/2014 10:42:00 AM

If the internet is the modern day version of the pirate-laden seas of old, then this map is a treasure to be enjoyed. The Map of the Internet depicts software and hardware companies organised geographically. Even with Pirate Bay on its own island, as you would expect.

But it's so much more. Creator Martin Vargic says: "The map is divided into two main parts; software companies, gaming companies and some of the real-world oriented websites are located on the right part of the map, or 'the old world'."

Vargic worked for 10 hours a day over three weeks to get the map made. Even in its current state he's calling it a work in progress. He was inspired to create it after seeing xkcd's Map of the Internet in 2010.

For a larger version of the map, which you can zoom into, follow this link to Deviant Art.

"The websites and majority of the internet itself are located on two eastern continents, the upper one showing social networks, forum websites, blogs, and the lower one filled with adult-oriented websites and internet crime," Vargic told the Huffington Post.

The mini maps show NSA surveillance, a list of Alexa Top 500 websites and a short timeline of the internet's history. Vargic has the 34 x 22-inch version of the map for sale for $34.70.

PlayStation 4 companion app update highlights live game broadcasts
1/31/2014 7:42:00 AM

The latest update for Sony's PlayStation mobile app is out for Android and iOS, and it's surprisingly video-focused. Thanks to the new Live from PlayStation section, available game streams can be browsed directly from your device -- although they won't open in the app itself. Ustream feeds open in the service's own application (at least on Android), while Twitch.tv streams are relegated to your mobile device's browser. The change log also notes that video notifications from the PS Store are supported, and you'll find them under the What's New section on the home screen. Additionally, the update promises to not pull your PS4 out of sleep mode when you open the app to, say, accept a friend request or queue a game download -- perfect if you're looking to conserve a little electricity.
