BBC Worldwide will launch three new channels to push BBC content internationally
1/28/2014 9:59:00 PM
BBC Worldwide plans to introduce three pay-TV channels so it can broadcast BBC content internationally.
Called BBC First, BBC Earth and BBC Brit, the pay-TV channels will launch in a few test markets initially. For instance, BBC First, which is considered comparable to HBO, will launch in Australia this summer.
Then there's BBC Earth. It already has a presence on both bbc.com and bbc.co.uk, and it has a four-year partnership with Sega in Japan for an interactive natural history theme park.
Now, BBC Earth will go to North America. That's because BBC is no longer working with Discovery, so it plans to air branded blocks with the BBC Earth name on some North American channels.
The third channel, called BBC Brit, is entertainment-based and is comparable to the popular UKTV channel Dave. That means it'll target males mostly, with a UK-type of humour.
