Hands-on: Hexbug Aquabot review

Hexbug had a colourful and literally buzzing stand at the Toy Fair 2014 in London, and among the Battling Spiders and Strandbeast, the company also used the event to launch a new style Aquabot.

For those not familiar with the Hexbug, Aquabot is the first waterborne micro robotic creature from the company and features smart fish technology, allowing it to move like a fish in water. In fact, if it wasn't for the visible mechanism through the translucent colour, you could even mistake them for the real thing at a quick glance.

The new Aquabot comes with LED lights that react in co-ordination with the movement of the tail so you'll be able to see your Aquabot swimming, even when it is dark. But don't worry, they will shut off automatically after five minutes so they won't keep you awake all night.

The Aquabot is powered by electro-magnetic propulsion, allowing it to move itself around the surroundings it is in, diving down, swimming around and changing direction randomly. They move quickly and swiftly though the water and don't seem to experience any technical issues.

Hexbug is adding two new body styles to its existing collection - the Hammerhead shark and the Angelfish.  There's also a Halloween special Aquabot and a Zombie edition. Both the Halloween and Zombie models add a creepy element to the Aquabot, making them seem less fish-like, and adding to their fun factor.

The new style Hexbug Aquabot will be available to add to your collection, or start your collection, in the latter half of 2014 and they are said to be suitable for ages 3 and up. The Aquabots cost £7.99 individually or £12.99 with a bowl.
