Panasonic's rugged 5-inch smartphone for US construction companies to unveil at MWC?

Although it quit consumer smartphones last autumn, Panasonic is reportedly poised to tackle the mobile market again by introducing a new, rugged smartphone meant for businesses like construction companies.

Panasonic announced last September that it would withdraw from the consumer smartphone market in Japan and the rest of the world. Within two fiscal years, Panasonic had suffered losses of around $15 billion (£9.6 billion), meaning it would have to ditch the Eluga range of mobile devices.

The company planned to focus on effective areas such as the Toughbook range of PCs and tablets. However, it appears Panasonic hasn't given up completely. According to tech news blog GForGames, which cited sources quoted in Japanese website Asahi, Panasonic wants to re-enter the smartphone space with a 5-inch, in-house developed handset.

The upcoming smartphone will reportedly feature shock resistant technology. That's because Panasonic wants a rugged smartphone ideal for construction sites. Panasonic is even negotiating with major US construction companies for a partnership, according to Asahi.

Panasonic will allegedly unveil its next smartphone at Mobile World Congress. The annual tradeshow kicks off on 24 February in Barcelona.
