Sony's Xperia Z Ultra will go from phablet to mini-tablet in new Wi-Fi-only version

Sony is planning a Wi-Fi only version of its Xperia Z Ultra smartphone, a listing on its developer website indicates.

The company has yet to make an official announcement for what would essentially make the Xperia Z Ultra a 6.44-inch mini-tablet, though it's expected to come soon. It has already appeared in several benchmarks around the web. 

The phablet version of the Xperia Z Ultra, available since October 2013, feels like a tablet with phone capabilities, so cutting out the 3G bands and knocking down the price seems like a logical move. The Wi-Fi only version isn't expected to carry any big changes over the phablet version by sticking with the same specifications.

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra features a 6.44-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 3,050mAh battery which is fixed into the body rather than replaceable. It also packs GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, 4G/LTE connectivity for most carriers around the world, DLNA connectivity, and a waterproof build.

If Sony gets the pricing right, the 6.44-inch mini-tablet could be an enticing solution for customers looking for a tablet smaller than the typical 7-inches. We'll be on the look-out for official pricing and availability information, which could come at Mobile World Congress in February.
